OPSIM 5.0 Released

06/02/2025

The download for OPSIM 5.0 is now available to all current users. Highlights are a substantial increase in speed, and completion of the "complex types" feature which has now become simply "assets". There are also two new tutorials that are related to this - one introducting assets & asset views in the context of calculating storage requirements, and another showing the failure and maintenance features in the context of wind farm maintenance, as well as calculating instantaneous power generation.

The speed improvement comes in large part from upgrading to Microsoft .NET 9, which does mean that you will be required to download and install this as part of the installation of OPSIM. However the minute or two this will take will quickly be compensated by the reduced simulation times.

Due to some reworking of the existing "complex types" feature into "assets", existing files will undergo an automatic migration and will therefore not open in OPSIM 4.x afterwards. In most cases where you are not using these features, we can work around this for you if you have a sudden requirement to open a new file on an old version - please contact support in this case.

Change Log

  • New 'Asset' block to represent real-world objects that require their own unique set of properties and/or system states (previously called 'complex types' in an incomplete and beta form).
  • Added asset views which allow for complex operations on collections of assets (sum of values coming from the subset of assets meeting certain criteria, etc.).
  • Added asset state trees which allow for definition of systems and distributions of failure rate. Systems can be maintained and their availabilty can also be checked as part of e.g. task limits.
  • OPSIM will now indicate if a state name entered into a limit or expression is not valid (and can click state name to get a list).
  • Significant speed increase due to recompliation against Microsoft .NET 9.
  • Add tooltips to custom properties and scenario properties to show where they're used.
  • Warnings are now provided if non-forecastable properties are included in a forecast (can be safely ignored if the property value is not going to change).
  • Bugfix for recording of delay cause if costs have been configured for a task list but then disabled.
  • Bugfix for auto-forecast not being applied if the first task in the group has no task type.
  • Bugfix for using ABS in conjuction with a random number generator outputting both positive and negative values.
